Zillow: Checkmate!

Brad Inman says “Checkmate!” Yesterday Brad Inman, real estate industry pioneer and founder of Inman News, commented on the Zillow (NASDAQ: Z) acquisition of chief rival Trulia (NYSE: TRLA) in an early morning press release: “In my view, this is checkmate. Soon, Zillow will control the chessboard, like Amazon does the publishing industry. The only meaningful consumer destination, Amazon, after many savvy moves, now controls pricing, merchandising, the data and the market. Soon, Zillow will control the pricing, the listings, the merchandizing and, for sure, the consumer.” That is a ... Read More »

Two Reasons Agents Fail

After a decade of training, coaching, and managing agents I’ve seen hundreds of agents leave the business broke.  Sadly, many of them could have been — and should have been — successful had they done just a couple of things differently. The fact is our industry turns over a third of its practitioners every single year.  In other words, one out of three agents in business today, will be out of business a year from now.  Try and think of another industry with that kind of failure rate. The sad ... Read More »

Give Yourself a Raise!

When is the last time you had a pay raise? If you’re like most agents it’s been a while.  I was talking to an agent just the other day and we were discussing increasing our incomes and this agent seemed to be thinking about her income being something out of her control.  Here is what I mean. If you ask most agents what they would need to do to make more money, they will almost universally give you the same answer — sell more houses.  In other words, increase the ... Read More »

OMG! What a Great Idea!

Yesterday I spoke on the phone to a very impressive agent named Flora A. I’ve withheld her last name because I don’t have her permission to share it. Flora practices real estate in the San Jose, California market and as a listing agent she was very interested in learning more about my listing approach. She is a long-time reader and has followed my blog and was asking me some questions about my 8% listing presentation and wanted my recommendation on which of my books might help her. I mentioned two: ... Read More »

Business Plan 2014 (Part 2)

In part one, I shared with you the importance of having vision as the foundation of building your business plan.  Every real plan has to begin with vision.  Without it, there is no specificity, but only a nebulous general direction and not a quantifiable destination. If you haven’t taken the time to get alone someplace quiet to build your vision for next year, please go back and reread part one and then take the time for this vital step.  Vision is absolutely critical to your plan.  Now let’s talk about ... Linda Powers Turning Leads Into Deals

Linda Powers is producing and closing new leads in one of the all-time worst real estate markets. While most agents today are afraid to try something new, one veteran real estate agent, Linda Powers, has successfully transitioned from traditional marketing to now working internet leads.  But more importantly,  she is closing business with her new found online customers. Was it easy?  For Linda it was.  How did she do it?  By being herself and engaging her online clients just like she’s been doing with traditional clients for years.  Linda uses ... Read More »

It’s Not Over ‘til the Fat Lady Sings…

The National Association of Realtors board of directors will meet in just five days to decide whether to approve the recommended dues increase of 50%.  If you haven’t had a chance to take the survey, feel free to take it now.  The survey will continue to stay up through the vote so that NAR leadership can see how we feel. Also, please let your local board leadership see the Open Letter to NAR with a link to the results.  If we can all put enough pressure on our local associations, ... Read More »
